02/13: Unusual stripped dolphin mortality events along the Italian coastline

Starting from the 4th January 2013, an alarming number of stripped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranding has been recorded along the Italian coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

This atypical mortality phenomenon has been notified by ACCOBAMS' Italian Focal Point. 42 stranding has been recorded,  distributed in Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Calabria and Sicily coasts.

A preliminary report, prepared by the concerned national authorities, has been transmitted to the ACCOBAMS permanent secretariat synthesizing known facts and data up to the 8th February 2013.

RAC/SPA and the ACCOBAMS permanent secretariat are requesting their respective Focal Points about any similar event recorded in their countries.
