Financing modalities

The principal recurrent funding for SPA/RAC activities and staffing is provided through the Trust Fund for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution (MTF).

Tunisia contributes with the hosting of the centre at the Tunis International Centre for Environmental Technologies (CITET) and the assumption of responsibility for part of the staff.

Additional funding is sought for actions that are clearly defined in space and time, either in response to international calls for proposals or through spontaneous proposals from sponsors, including volunteer countries, international institutions, donor agencies and the private sector.

International funding agencies sometimes provide external funding in response to suggestions for environmental action programmes ( AECID / EC/ FFEM / GEFUNEP ), SPA/RAC works also with private sponsors as the Total Foundation.

Some projects are co-funded jointly with the Secretariats of other Conventions and International Agreements, IGOs and NGOs, for actions to encourage sustainable development and promote biodiversity. Other sources of support may be added through sponsorship.
